Datasets

Every dataset TopoLines traces from, by region: publisher, product, resolution, licence and the plan that unlocks it — plus the coastline data and output coordinate systems.

The full list of data behind a TopoLines map. Elevation picks itself per zone (see Elevation data); the source that actually served your zone is shown in Map info and written, with its credit, into the metadata of every export.

GEDTM30 is the default everywhere. If it is unreachable, the zone is served by the AWS Terrain Tiles instead, so a trace never fails on a provider outage.

Austria

BEV (Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying)ALS DTM ÖsterreichTerrain (DTM, lidar)5 mCC BY 4.0Pro (HD)

Nationwide airborne-laser terrain model. Large areas are served at 10–20 m so they stay on lidar. Zones crossing the border fall back to the worldwide sources.

Geobasis NRWDGM1 Nordrhein-WestfalenTerrain (DTM, lidar)5 mdl-de/zero-2.0Pro (HD)

Germany has no free nationwide terrain model, so lidar is added state by state: Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia for now. Bavaria is served up to ~100 km², NRW up to 20 m on large areas. Other states, and zones crossing a state border, fall back to the worldwide sources.

Italy

INGVTINITALY/1.1Terrain (DTM, bare earth)10 mCC BY 4.0Pro (HD)

Covers all of Italy, Sicily and Sardinia included. Large areas are served at 20–30 m so they stay on TINITALY. Zones crossing the border, San Marino and the Vatican fall back to the worldwide sources.

Switzerland

Covers all of Switzerland. Areas up to ~300 km² are served at 5–10 m; larger ones and zones crossing the border fall back to the worldwide sources.

England

Covers over 95% of England. Large areas are served at 10–20 m so they stay on lidar. Wales and Scotland fall back to the worldwide sources.

How a source is chosen

  • A national model serves a zone only when the zone sits entirely inside its country. A zone crossing a border falls back to the worldwide 10 m source — a map is never stitched from two datasets.
  • Very large zones on a national model also fall back to 10 m, to keep the trace within the server’s limits.
  • More countries are on the way; each new national model lands on this page.

Output coordinate systems

Every trace is computed in WGS 84. Vector exports (GeoJSON, DXF) can be reprojected on the way out:

CRSName
EPSG:4326WGS 84 (lon/lat) — default

EPSG:2154RGF93 / Lambert-93 (France)

EPSG:27700OSGB36 / British National Grid
