Topographic Map of Seyðisfjörður

Seyðisfjörður lies at the head of a long, narrow fjord in eastern Iceland, its colourful timber houses backed by steep mountains laced with waterfalls. The fjord is walled so tightly that avalanches are part of local life.

Bjólfur rises to 1,085 m on one side and Strandartindur close to 1,000 m on the other, both dropping steeply to the fjord with cascades streaking their flanks. The village occupies the flat delta at the water's head. On the map the fjord is a thin flat corridor pinched between two walls of tightly packed mountain contour.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from public SRTM 30 m radar data, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
