Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, sits at the mouth of a vast fjord system on the island's southwest coast, dwarfed by the peaks that rise around it. The jagged mountain of Sermitsiaq stands offshore as the city's unmistakable landmark.

Sermitsiaq rises to 1,210 m on its own island just north of the city, Store Malene (Ukkusissat) stands close behind the town, and the branching arms of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord reach deep inland toward the ice sheet. On the map the fjord system reads as a maze of flat channels winding between isolated blocks of steep, densely contoured mountain — a drowned Arctic landscape.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from the public GEDTM30 30 m bare-earth terrain model, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
