Topographic Map of Nice

Nice sits where the southern Pre-Alps meet the Mediterranean, its old town pressed between the shoreline and steep hills that rise straight from the sea. The contour lines start at the coast and climb into the Alpes-Maritimes within a few kilometres inland.

The terrain around Nice

Behind the Baie des Anges the terrain rises quickly toward Mont Chauve and the limestone ridges of the arrière-pays, cut by the deep valleys of the Var and the Paillon. The map captures the coastal amphitheatre clearly: contours hug the shoreline, then tighten into the folded relief that gives the Côte d'Azur its dramatic backdrop.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from public SRTM 30 m radar data, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 40 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
