Lugano curves around its lake in Italian-speaking Ticino, squeezed between two conical peaks that rise straight from the shoreline. Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore frame the bay like bookends.

The terrain around Lugano

San Salvatore rises to 912 m on the western headland, Monte Brè to 925 m on the eastern, and Monte Generoso passes 1,700 m further south. Lake Lugano's branching arms wind between them, so the contours alternate between the flat water and abrupt, tightly packed climbs — a very legible pre-alpine lake landscape.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from public SRTM 30 m radar data, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 50 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.

You can regenerate this exact view — and change the interval, colours, resolution or export it as a print-ready SVG — directly in the TopoLines editor.
