Ljubljana sits in a basin where the Ljubljanica river winds past the castle hill, ringed by low ridges with the Kamnik Alps rising beyond to the north. The old town wraps around a wooded crag, and hills break the flat basin on several sides.

The terrain around Ljubljana

The Castle Hill rises modestly in the centre, Šmarna Gora stands to the north at 669 m, and the marshy Ljubljana Marsh spreads flat to the south. Further north the ground climbs toward the Kamnik–Savinja Alps well above 2,000 m. On the map the basin reads as open ground threaded by the meandering river, framed by isolated hills and the rising alpine front on the horizon.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from public SRTM 30 m radar data, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 50 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.

You can regenerate this exact view — and change the interval, colours, resolution or export it as a print-ready SVG — directly in the TopoLines editor.
