Flåm lies at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the vast Sognefjord, where the famous mountain railway climbs out of the valley. The narrow Nærøyfjord splits off nearby as one of the tightest navigable fjords in the world.

The Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord cut deep, steep-walled channels into a plateau that rises toward 1,600 m, with the Flåmsdalen valley threading inland from the village. The relief is extreme and close-packed. On the map the branching fjord arms read as thin flat corridors of water, and the plateau between them as a dense, high field of contour broken by plunging side-valleys.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from the public GEDTM30 30 m bare-earth terrain model, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
