Topographic Map of Cagliari

Cagliari, Sardinia's capital, is built across a cluster of low limestone hills between two coastal lagoons and the Gulf of Cagliari. The historic Castello quarter sits on the highest of these hills, walled and dominant over the port and the flat wetlands around it.

The terrain around Cagliari

The Sella del Diavolo headland closes the beach of Poetto to the east, the Colle di San Michele rises inland, and the Molentargius and Santa Gilla lagoons spread as flat expanses flanking the city. The relief is gentle — barely 350 m across the frame — so on the map the contours read as soft, widely spaced rings around the hills, with the lagoons and coastline doing much of the drawing.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from public SRTM 30 m radar data, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 20 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
