Bishkek lies on the flat Chuy valley floor at around 800 m, with the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan rising as a snow wall directly to the south. The city itself is almost level, but the mountains fill the horizon just beyond its southern edge.

South of the city the ground pitches up abruptly into the Kyrgyz Ala-Too, whose crest passes 4,000 m within a short distance and feeds the mountain rivers that cross the capital. To the north the Chuy valley runs flat toward the Kazakh border. On the map the contrast is extreme: an open, nearly contour-free plain that slams into one of the densest mountain fronts in Central Asia.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from the public GEDTM30 30 m bare-earth terrain model, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
