Akureyri, the main town of northern Iceland, sits near the head of Eyjafjörður, the country's longest fjord, ringed by mountains that hold snow late into summer. It lies only a short distance south of the Arctic Circle.

Súlur rises to 1,213 m above the town and the Vaðlaheiði ridge closes the eastern shore, with peaks toward 1,500 m flanking the long fjord as it reaches inland. The flat valley of the Eyjafjarðará opens to the south. On the map the fjord reads as a straight open channel framed by dense mountain contour, opening onto the level farmland at its head.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from the public GEDTM30 30 m bare-earth terrain model, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
