Addis Ababa spreads across the southern foot of the Entoto range at around 2,355 m, one of the highest capitals in Africa. The city climbs steadily from its lower southern districts up toward the forested ridge that gave it its founding site.

The Entoto Mountains rise to roughly 3,200 m along the northern edge, a long wooded crest overlooking the whole capital, while the ground falls away gently southward across the highland plateau. Shallow river valleys thread through the built area. On the map the northern ridge reads as a firm band of contours backing an otherwise broad, moderately sloping highland bowl.

How this map was made

Every contour line traces a constant elevation drawn from the public GEDTM30 30 m bare-earth terrain model, extracted with a marching-squares algorithm at a 100 m interval and coloured by height — cool blues in the valley climbing to warm reds on the summits. The satellite base layer and the contours share the same Web Mercator projection, so the lines fall exactly on the ground they describe.
