Every point on Earth has an elevation. A topographic map generator reads that elevation across an area, finds all the points that sit at the same height — say every 10 metres — and joins them into a single line. How to generate topographic contour lines, step by step

  1. Pick a place. Search for a town, mountain range or coastline, or just pan the map until the terrain you want is in view.
  2. Draw a zone. Drag a rectangle over the area. The generator shows the area in km² live so you stay inside the free limit (or scale up on Pro).
  3. Set the contour interval. A tight interval (5–10 m) gives dense, detailed lines; a wide interval gives a calm, minimal look. This is the single biggest control over the final feel.
  4. Style the lines. Choose a solid colour or an elevation gradient that colours each contour by its height, set the stroke width, and optionally add taper so lines thin out with altitude.
  5. Export. Download print-ready SVG (vector, grouped by elevation) or HD PNG — or copy straight to your clipboard and paste into Figma.

Choosing the right contour interval

The contour interval is the height gap between adjacent lines, and it’s the control that most changes the result:

A good rule of thumb: match the interval to the relief. Flat coastal areas need a tight interval to show anything; tall ranges need a wide one to stay readable.
